Summary

The Senior Research Associate will lead research and development of technologies and methods for his/her unit while mentoring team members and identifying portfolio expansion opportunities. This role will also perform functions to identify, develop, and track proposals to fund future projects.

What You Need

  • Masters or Ph.D in Human Factors, HCI, Industrial Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Applied Psychology, or Experimental Psychology or related field

  • Minimum 4 years experience conducting in human factors research and development, cognitive task analysis, and gathering user-centered requirements from observational data
  • Direct experience funding and developing R&D programs through white papers and proposals; Direct experience managing R&D programs.
  • Requires strong project management and networking skills

Job Responsibilities

  • Support research with minimal guidance and assimilate results.
  • Plan and conduct human factors research and end user evaluations of interactive systems/product concepts, analyze data, and document evaluation methods; create tables, charts, figures, etc. and support interpretation of data for technical report and manuscript publication.
  • Plan and conduct needs analysis, focus groups, competitive usability analyses, cognitive walkthroughs and other research.
  • Ensure smooth progression of participants through progressive stages of a study and resolve issues inhibiting day-to-day operations of the study.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries and quantitative analyses of assigned research projects.
  • Contribute to writing manuscripts for publications
  • Research literature related to specific projects or proposals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the evolving field of Human Factors, including critical topic areas (e.g., perceptual skills, decision making, situational awareness, neurophysiology, cognitive modeling, leadership, critical thinking, culture, emotion, trust, multimodal interaction, team performance, usability, etc.), methodologies, and tools, as they relate to DI's practice areas of Performance Assessment, Training Systems, Cognitive Readiness, and Next Generation Human Systems Integration.
  • Act as business field team lead; build end user relationships and identify transition customers; Execute projects that lead to follow-on work.
  • Lead knowledge facilitation sessions with subject manager experts.
  • Translate user needs into detailed requirements specifications and design documents, ensuring requirements are properly represented and the appropriate level of user participation is achieved.
  • Manage risk by identifying, quantifying and monitoring potential threats to the project.
  • Develop Statement of Work for winning bid proposals; provide task breakdown and schedule estimates to support proposal cost creation.
  • Manage less complex projects; use SOW and estimating techniques to forecast tasking and create project schedules; manage project budgets
  • Promote products and services at various customer locations and functions.
  • Maintain knowledge pertaining to DI's strategic direction, goals, and objectives and align projects appropriately.

  • Requires solid understanding of the theories, principals, and data associated with human performance capabilities and limitations (perceptual, cognitive, motor and neural) and instructional design. Ability to apply this knowledge to the design, requirements definition, and evaluation of interactive systems
  • Requires ability to use appropriate human factors techniques to work with end users to determine end user behavior, preferences, and usage models, and integrate these into requirements specification and design documents
  • Requires proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office including, but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet design and maintenance, and creating presentations

Other Responsibilities

  • Promote DI products and services at various customer locations and functions.
  • Interview, recommend and train staff as required. May evaluate performance or assist in the evaluation process.
  • Recommend staffing requirements as necessary.
  • Physical requirements involve performing general office activities.
  • Position requires local, overnight, and a minimal amount of extended travel.
